Why is there the Malaga Feria?
The history of the Malaga Fair commemorates the taking of the city by the Catholic Monarchs on August 19, 1487, incorporating it into the Crown of Castile.
These gave the city the image of the Virgen de la Victoria. The newly formed City council decided as commemoration of the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs, an annual feast is made the day of the Assumption, to commemorate that fact. The celebration dates back to 15th August 1491 starting with a procession.
Where is the Malaga Feria ?
One of the peculiarities of the Feria de Malaga lies in the division of celebration areas, because although the fairground is in the Cortijo de Torres, the historic center of Malaga lives his particular “fair day”. So you could say that there are at Malaga two fairs, the “Fair Day” in the city center, and the “Fair Night” in the Cortijo de Torres, although at the fairgrounds festive activity is held for all day.
What happens at the Malaga Feria ?
By day, the city center is bustling with people, due largely to the date of celebration in which hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world spend their holidays on the Costa del Sol. The streets of historic center are decorated with lanterns and floral decorations, booths are assembled, they show for children and adults, dances, parades with orchestras and endless events among which would highlight the verdiales groups that travel the roads and squares major held showing its unique and ancient folklore, while the carriages and horses take shots festooned the streets of the city. Also flamenco and copla are present throughout the fair because we must not forget that Malaga and its province is a geographical area of singing. In addition to traditional music, in many places during the day and fair booths at the fair night you can hear different musical styles for every taste.
At night the party is concentrated in the Real Cortijo de Torres, where neatly booths, stalls and fairground rides for the amusement of all ages are located.
